A Deer of Nine Colors
A Deer of Nine Colors is a story based on the Buddhist Jataka tale, telling how the Deer King saved a drowning man and later betrayed by him. The story advocates justice, praises great virtues, and further promotes the idea that good will be rewarded and evil will be punished.
The image of the Nine-Colored Deer also appears on the mural in Cave 257 of the Mogao Caves (a UNESCO World Heritage) in
Dunhuang. The author of this book, the famous musician Tan Dun, rewrote this story after visiting Dunhuang several times, and also composed the music the symphonic masterpiece Dunhuang: Hymn of Compassion and
Buddha Passion
.
Tan Dun, born 18 August 1957, is a Chinese-born American composer and conductor. A leading figure of contemporary classical music, he draws from a variety of Western and Chinese influences, a pairing which has shaped much of his life and music. Having collaborated with leading orchestras around the world, Tan is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Grawemeyer Award for his operaMarco Polo (1996) and both an Academy Award and Grammy Awardfor his film score in Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000).
Yao Li is a freelance illustrator, graduated from the Chinese Painting Department of the Academy of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University.
